Sonia Sanchez was a poet born in 1934 in Alabama. She received her BA in political science and briefly studied writing at NYU. Her writing focused on themes of sexism, child abuse, and the struggles of black Americans. She wrote in Black American dialects rather than standard English. Her poetry encouraged African Americans to embrace their history and stay strong in the face of challenges.
